Tanzania has a wealth of natural attraction. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, is situated in the northeast, near the tourist hub of Arusha. The nearby game parks of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire receive most of the visitor volume. Other notable game parks are Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park in the south and Gombe National Park in the west. Further to the west are the Great Lakes, Lake Victoria (Africa's largest lake) and Lake Tanganyika (the world's deepest lake). The capitol city of Dar Es Salaam is located on the eastern shore. But the main attraction is the exotic island of Zanzibar lying just offshore, with its Swahili architecture, spice plantations and white sand beaches.

Malaria - Risk exists all year throughout the country below 1800m (5906ft) - however most of the Serengeti/Ngorongoro/Arusha area is above the malaria zone. Mefloquine, doxycycline or atovaquone/proguanil are recommended. Yellow Fever - A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of all travelers over one year of age traveling from infected areas and travelers coming from countries considered to be endemic by the Tanzanian authorities. If your flight or any part of your itinerary passes through Kenya, you DO require a yellow fever shot. You must have this shot 10 days prior to arrival at the Tanzania border. Cholera - According to 1973 WHO guidelines, a cholera vaccination is no longer required for entry into Tanzania. However, there are regular outbreaks of cholera throughout the country and precautions are essential. Up-to-date advice should be sought before deciding whether these precautions should include vaccination as medical opinion is divided over its effectiveness.
